A shield-maiden (Old Norse: skjaldmær [ˈskjɑldˌmɛːz̠]) was a female warrior from Scandinavian folklore and mythology. Shieldmaidens appear in sagas such as Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks and in Gesta Danorum. The mythical Valkyries may have been based on such shieldmaidens. While, historical existence of shield-maidens is still heavily debated, they do feature prominently in the Viking series. Lagertha, Gunnhild, Astrid, Torvi, Porunn and Brynhildr are among the shield-maidens featured.
