A shield-maiden (Old Norse: skjaldmær [ˈskjɑldˌmɛːz̠]) was a female warrior from Scandinavian folklore and mythology. Shieldmaidens appear in sagas such as Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks and in Gesta Danorum. The mythical Valkyries may have been based on such shieldmaidens.
